So today, bored out of my mind, I have decided to take the plunge and start a blog. I'm probably not gonna publicise it very well, and I doubt anyone out there who actually knows me will ever read it - but heck, it's gotta be more entertaining than sitting at your desk refreshing Facebook every two minutes vainly hoping one of your friends will come online and rescue you from the mundane boredom that is your Thursday afternoon. I have it on good authority that adding a blog to your CV is a good idea if you're interested in a career in the media, as it gives potential employers something to gauge your suitability on. Now I know it's going to be many years before I'm doing anything as daunting as looking for a career path, but I figure I might as well start now, the next couple of years' worth of blogging can be a warm-up.
Maybe I should start off with a little bit about myself. My name's Matt and I'm currently studying English Literature at the University of Exeter. I'm about 4 weeks into the course and enjoying it very much. Why did you choose English, I hear you ask, imaginary reader? Well the answer to that one's pretty simple, it's what I'm best at. From quite an early age all I ever really wanted to do in my spare time was read. Now I'm older that particular habit has grown to the epic proportion of me voluntary sacrificing three years of my life upon the altar of English Literature. I've got something of a plan though - 3 years here, hopefully do well and get some relevant work experience, a 6-9 month NCTJ course to follow and then "voila!", a long and successful career at a Newspaper of my choice.
I'm only joking, I'm under no illusions that life is that simple, but right now, moving into this new phase of mine, I'm kinda drawing comfort from the idea that I can at least pretend I have it all figured out (and if you tell me otherwise I'll just slap you). At some point I'll probably have a bad day or two and post some really deep essay about the nature of life and love and all that. When I do please try and bear (not bare, as a smart-arse friend of mine was quick to point out to me the other day) with me - I will work it out of my system and then be back to my hilarious, tongue-in-cheek posts, I promise.
So anyways, I am fairly sure I'm meant to use this thing to cast my opinions on current events out into the ether, but I reckon it'll probably end up exactly as the title states: random and probably more than a little pretentious. Oh, and if you're super lucky maybe a drunk post or two - the perks of uni life.
That's enough for now I guess,
Matt Out.
